Time away with your family can be genuinely good. Slower mornings, longer conversations, laughter that doesn't happen on a regular Tuesday. Vacations matter. But the family system you've built travels with you. The parent who over-functions at home will over-function at the beach. The scenery changes. The system doesn't. The good news? Awareness is where change begins. And vacation might be the perfect place to start paying attention.

This winter pulled me away from writing and into rooms filled with conversations and tables. Tables with families doing deep work, with friends sharing connection, and with communities gathering in both joy and challenge. Different tables, same invitation. It reminded me that the table isn’t just where connection is proven, but where it’s practiced. An everyday space to show up, engage, and reconnect in meaningful ways.

While family vacations are often expected to be joyful and restorative, the reality is that many families find that being together for extended periods can actually highlight existing communication challenges, emotional stress, or unresolved conflict. Without the usual routines and distractions, patterns can become more visible and more difficult to manage. A therapeutic family vacation is an intentionally planned travel experience that blends time away from daily stressors.
